There's a plethora of companies
promising you top positioning within major search
engines. On any given week I receive
dozens of junk e-mail
messages promising me the world. The best thing you
can keep in mind with regards to search
engine promises such as these is the old
adage; "If it sounds too good to be true, it
probably is."
If you're serious about developing a
long term strategy for search
engine performance, I'd be happy to share
some ideas with you.
Here's a few facts: |
 |
|
a) |
There are 4 major search
engines/directories: |
|
|
 |
 |
|
b) |
No matter what you're
promised, no one can guarantee
a certain rank
(position) in any search
engine. Search
engines are automated applications
that rank web pages based on predefined
criteria, not a relationship with any
company, group, or individual. |
 |
 |
|
c) |
There are no
"tricks" or "secrets" to
achieve search
engine performance. Search spiders
read and index text, period. Some search spiders
will include META,
ALT and IMG tag
data,
so there is some, more minor, importance to
developing tags
that are keyword-rich
and conform to META
guidelines. Top placement will occur when
you've created web
pages that are friendly to search
bots
and when your page content is relevant and
effective. |
 |
 |
|
d) |
SearchBots
(spiders)
look for fresh content. Keeping your website's
content updated will go a long way towards
helping you achieve top positioning. |
