Search Engine Optimization

There's a plethora of companies promising you top positioning within major search engines. On any given week I receive dozens of junk email messages promising me the world. The best thing you can keep in mind with regards to search engine promises such as these is the old adage; "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

If you're serious about developing a long term strategy for search engine performance, I'd be happy to share some ideas with you.

Here's a few facts:

a) There are four US search engines:

1. Google®
2. The Microsoft® Network (MSN)
3. Yahoo!®
4. The Open Directory Project (DMOZ)

b) No matter what you're promised, NO ONE can guarantee a position in any search engine.

c) There are no "tricks" or "secrets" to achieve search engine performance. Search spiders read and index text, period. Some search spiders will include META, ALT and IMG tag data, so there is some, more minor, importance to developing tags that are keyword-rich and conform to META guidelines. Top placement will occur when you've created web pages that are friendly to search bots and when your content contains effective content.

d) Search bots (spiders) look for fresh content. Keeping your website's content updated will go a long way towards helping you achieve top positioning.

Shopping Carts
Electronic shopping carts allow you to sell your products and services over the Internet, which opens your business (no matter how large or small) up to a global marketplace. Website Security
Ensuring website security is crucial if your e-business is going to be successful. Customers need to be able to trust that their personal and payment information is going to be safe and not in jeopardy of being stolen. The answer to website security is a technology called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). There are numerous reputable Certificate Authorities (CA). I can help you weed-through the clutter to determine which  digital SSL certificate is right for you. About public key encryption/decryption:
Public key encryption is a technique that uses a pair of asymmetric keys for encryption and decryption. Each pair of keys consists of a public key and a private key. The public key is made public when it is distributed it widely. The private key is never distributed; it is always kept secret. Data that is encrypted with the public key can only be decrypted with the private key. Conversely, data that is encrypted with the private key can be decrypted only with the public key. This asymmetry is the property that makes public key cryptography so useful.

Point-Of-Sale Applications

The recent runaway popularity of intranets/extranets is simple to understand once you understand exactly what each term means and how each technology can impact your business.

INTRANETS: An intranet is a small, privately owned, Internet that's contained within a company or organization's computer network. It is typically accessible only to company employees and/or other authorized persons. An intranet allows employees and others to share data, information, files and applications. Basically, it acts just like the Internet in every way.

EXTRANETS: An extranet can be thought-of as the exterior to an intranet. XML Data Streaming

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, XML is now playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere.

I can work with you to develop a powerful extensible language (XML, XHTML, XSL, XSLT, RSS) application that will allow you to import and export real-time data to and from your website, databases, data and content management systems. Extensible language applications are remarkably powerful, interoperable and expandable. Plus, as with most of my developments, my extensible language applications are built in open source.

As an example; perhaps your supplier provides product catalogs in XML. I can build an interface that will allow you to collect the XML data that's important to you and convert it into a useable format.

Another example; perhaps you have a manufacturing company and want to publish your product data in XML format so that your customers and distributors will be able to integrate it into their data management system without extensive data mapping. Website Maintenance
If you have a website but are having troubles keeping the content updated, I provide three different solutions, each of which will keep your website's content fresh and relevant. Fresh, relevant content will help to keep visitors coming back, as well as help your website achieve a higher ranking in the major search engines.

OPTION ONE: Personal Maintenance
Under the terms of this agreement I will personally perform maintenance either once a month, or once a week, depending on your specific needs. Personal maintenance agreements begin at $480.00 (US) per year.

OPTION TWO: Dynamic Content
I can develop small Microsoft® Access®, or MS SQL®, databases and browser-based graphical user interfaces that will allow you to securely and safely manage your website's content yourself, from any computer in the world that's connected to the Internet. This option requires no special software or training; If you know how to type and use a mouse you'll be able to manage your content (text, pictures, forms, documents, files) with nothing but a web browser.

OPTION THREE: XML Data Feed
Depending on your particular industry, there may be one or more sources of relevant XML data. Many XML data sources are free, many aren't. Either way, I can seamlessly integrate any XML data source into your website.
